"So if you could do anything to plan your trips, vacations around that Delta flight to LaGuardia, you'll be helping the entire community."
Jack Ryals is senior advisor for local and regional affairs at Melbourne Orlando International Airport. He said that to a Space Coast Chamber of Commerce audience at Hilton Melbourne on Aug. 6, as Florida Today reported. The airport's own passenger numbers explain the request.
MLB's domestic traffic is shrinking. This winter it is adding domestic nonstops anyway, and officials have said what happens next depends on how full those planes are. For anyone in Melbourne who usually drives to Orlando for the holidays, the departures board at the airport off NASA Boulevard is worth a fresh look.
What the August Report Shows
The airport's monthly activity report for August 2026 was included in the board packet for its Sept. 23 meeting. It splits passengers into domestic and international, and the two numbers are moving in opposite directions.
| Year to date through August | 2026 | 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic revenue passengers | 340,881 | 354,788 | down 3.9% |
| International revenue passengers | 87,208 | 85,440 | up 2.1% |
| Total passengers, all categories | 439,347 | 450,982 | down 2.6% |
| Air carrier operations | 4,312 | 4,478 | down 3.7% |
August by itself was weaker still. Total passengers came to 63,638, down 4.8% from August 2025, and domestic revenue passengers fell 7.6% for the month.
The international number holds up because of TUI, the UK leisure carrier. It flies into MLB from Birmingham, Belfast, Glasgow, London-Gatwick, Manchester and Newcastle. In the July 15 board minutes, airport staff reported that 2026 was MLB's fourth season with TUI. MLB scored above TUI's targets in all four categories of its passenger survey, including 88 for airport experience against a goal of 78. Over the last three years, MLB has ranked in TUI's top five worldwide for customer satisfaction.
The domestic side is the part that relies on travelers from Brevard County, and it's the part that's slipping. Ryals was frank about it at the chamber event. He said the airport had done "a spectacular job of being a catalyst for economic development" and "a less-than-spectacular job of air service for lots of reasons. Many, many of them beyond our control," according to Florida Today.
The New York Weekends Are the Test Case
Delta's new seasonal nonstop between Melbourne and New York's LaGuardia starts Saturday, Dec. 19, 2026. It runs on Saturdays and Sundays with one round trip each day, and the last scheduled flight is May 2, 2027. That works out to 40 round trips and 6,000 seats for the season, Spectrum News 13 reported.
Mark Busalacchi, MLB's director of business development, told Spectrum News 13 that New York is "our number two most popular unserved market here at Melbourne." Airport leaders also said the weekend schedule was built around Port Canaveral's cruise calendar. Before this route, every Delta flight out of Melbourne went to Atlanta.
Officials have also said how the route could grow. "If the route does well, we anticipate Delta will add daily service," Busalacchi told Spectrum News 13. Ryals went further at the chamber event. He said Delta was "totally on board" with going daily if the weekend flights are very successful, and could add more than one flight a day after that, per Florida Today. Every one of those statements depends on demand. Neither the airport nor Delta has announced daily service.
For a Melbourne household with family in New York, the trip starts on the weekend this year. If you'd usually fly out of Orlando for a holiday visit, you can now leave from your own airport on Saturday or Sunday, starting the weekend before Christmas.
The Twin Cities Route Shows a Route Can Come Back
Sun Country Airlines is the other winter addition, and its history shows how much a season's results matter. Its seasonal nonstop to Minneapolis-St. Paul had run in earlier winters before it skipped the 2026 season, which Florida Today called a "one-winter hiatus." The route returns Jan. 22, 2027, and the final flight is scheduled for April 2, 2027. The airport's airline page lists it as twice-weekly service.
In the airport's announcement, Executive Director Greg Donovan said the route's return "reflects the strong demand we've seen from both Space Coast travelers and visitors from the Twin Cities region." Florida Today also reported that Allegiant Air acquired Sun Country in a $1.5 billion deal finalized in May 2026. Allegiant already flies from MLB to Pittsburgh, Allentown and Cincinnati.
In January, MLB will see a seasonal route return after a year away. The Delta weekends start a month earlier under the same kind of scrutiny.
The Full Board for This Winter
Here's the route map as the airport lists it, with the winter dates in order.
- Allegiant: twice-weekly nonstops to Pittsburgh, Allentown and Cincinnati
- American: several daily nonstops to Charlotte
- Delta: several daily nonstops to Atlanta, plus the new LaGuardia weekends
- Sun Country: twice-weekly seasonal service to Minneapolis-St. Paul
- TUI: seasonal flights from six UK cities
- Dec. 19, 2026: Delta's first Melbourne–LaGuardia weekend flight
- Jan. 22, 2027: Sun Country's Minneapolis-St. Paul service resumes
- April 2, 2027: Sun Country's last scheduled flight of the season
- May 2, 2027: Delta's last scheduled LaGuardia flight of the season
The airport's airline page has no date on it, and the research didn't turn up a published TUI schedule for winter 2026–27. Check frequencies and dates on each airline's booking site before you plan around them. The latest release on MLB's news page is from July 15. Nothing posted since then announces a new carrier or a cut route.
What the Terminal Looks Like in December
If the domestic routes need more local passengers, the terminal experience is part of the pitch. Some of the construction is finished, and some will still be in progress over the holidays.
- Parking: MLB's public lot is a short walk from the terminal, with no shuttle. It costs $1 per 20 minutes, up to $16 per 24 hours. For a week-long holiday trip, the cap means a predictable parking bill.
- Pickups: The free cell phone waiting lot is open 24/7, with access from the "Return to Terminal" road.
- Rental cars: The counters for Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty are near baggage claim.
- Ceilings: The July 15 construction update said new ceilings in ticketing, baggage and the rental car areas were complete.
- Skylight: In the same July update, skylight replacement was expected to finish by November. The atrium ceiling work can't start until the skylight is done.
- Baggage: The in-line baggage system, which includes new EDS scanning machines already installed, was scheduled for completion in January 2027.
- Seating: The Sept. 23 board agenda recommended buying 436 replacement seats and related terminal furniture for $388,834.85. That was a recommendation at the time of the agenda, not a confirmed purchase.
One parking change has drawn a lot of interest. In February, Florida Today reported plans for a rental car pickup and drop-off area next to the terminal. Moving rental cars there would free about 350 spaces in the long-term lot. The September board packet lists a $5 million "Car Rental Ready Return Lot" in the airport's fiscal 2027 capital forecast. No source reviewed for this post confirms the lot is open or the extra spaces are available yet. Plan your holiday parking around the lot as it works today.
Why One Route Matters to the Whole Airport
The airport is busy in other ways. Total aircraft operations through August 2026 were up 3% from the same period in 2025, boosted by a 31.8% jump in local general aviation flights. Northrop Grumman recently dedicated its new 300,000-square-foot Building 250 on airport property off NASA Boulevard. Airport officials told Spectrum News 13 the property supports 20,000 daily employees across 60 companies.
Passenger flights are what Ryals described as the weaker side, and air carrier operations are down 3.7% year to date through August. Delta's 6,000 LaGuardia seats are small next to MLB's 439,347 passengers so far this year. But this is the route officials have publicly tied to growth: weekend service first, then daily service if demand supports it. Delta's first Melbourne–LaGuardia flight is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19, 2026.
